Convert DVD to your iPod, your iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, Droid, Nexus One or Zune for free. DVD Catalyst Free is the ONLY free 1-click DVD conversion utility available, and enables you to create video files for your portable devices without the need to read through complicated guides or to install a variety of different programs.

Before DVD Catalyst Free, the only option for free DVD conversions was to use guides found on community websites. These guides usually require the user to install a couple of different applications, all designed to perform a single task, and then follow the steps in order to get to the end-result. While these guides do offer a lot more control over the actual conversion quality, the problem is that it takes a lot of time and trial-and-error to get things figured out for new users. In most cases, forums where these guides posted, there are numerous newbie users who are confused or have problems with one step in the process. As a result, we decided to create DVD Catalyst Free.

DVD Catalyst Free takes care of all the steps in those guides, and eliminates the need to install additional software. It is based on DVD Catalyst 3, and while it lacks many advanced features, it retains the 1-click user interface, and the most popular device profiles.

Besides converting DVDs, it can also convert video files from and to a variety of different video formats, without the need to install codecs. No additional software is required for DVD Catalyst to do it’s thing.

Features

Multi-Award Winning, DVD Catalyst has won major awards for every major version released.

Works without the need to install additional software. (for some devices (PocketPC, Android) a decent (free) video player applicationmight need to be installed.

Converts recorded DVD, as well as commercial Movie and TV show DVDs.

Converts DVDs using a “track” system, which displays all the video content on the DVD, including special features, trailers and easter-egg tracks.

Supports subtitles, language selection and Closed Captions

Converts ‘on-the-fly’, no huge storage space is needed, only the filesize estimated for the created video files.

Supports ‘batching, multiple DVD drives, multiple video files, or a mix thereof are all converted in order. Add as many as you want, and let DVD Catalyst run overnight.

Automatic DVD, DVD Catalyst detects new DVDs on insert, and ejects them when done.

Options

DVD Catalyst Free is created to provide a simple way to convert movies for portable devices. Besides a basic quality adjustment, it does not have configuration options to modify settings set by the device profiles. Selecting a device profile automatically sets parameters required for creating video content compatible for the selected device, but nothing else.

To be able to modify additional profile settings, such as audio quality or black-bar removal, please upgrade to one of our other products, found on www.tools4movies.com. Besides offering more configuration options, they offer faster DVD conversions for most DVDs as well.

Selecting a device profile automatically selects the proper video format required for playback on the selected device. Some devices, such as PalmOS- and Windows Mobile-based devices do not have proper video playback, and for these devices, additional software is needed to be able to play the created video files. Please refer to the “Included device profiles” section for details on this.

In addition, the device profile sets the screen size of the device, which is used to optimize the video to make it fit, while preserving the best possible quality. The video will just be resized to fit within the screen size set by the profile, without further modifications. Depending on the device, as well as the video content, you might have black borders when viewing the video on your device. To eliminate this, please upgrade to one of our other software products.

The video quality is also automatically set by the device profile, but you can freely adjust this to fit your needs. The default setting for each device is selected based on providing a good quality at a reasonable file size. A quality indication (Q-value) gives you an indication of what quality to expect. Usually a value of 8 provides good quality. If you increase the video quality, keep in mind that the resulting quality can never be better than the quality of the original video, and going over 12 will not really be noticeable.

DVD Catalyst can read (convert) the following video files and formats:

I’ve tried 5 other products before this one, and this product is the best, hands down. Blazing fast and easy to use. I’ve had other programs that didn’t convert certain dvd’s but DVD Catalyst has converted everything I’ve put in front if it. I have a PPC, PSP, and an IPOD and it’s perfect for all of them. Search no more. A must have product.

Why Did I Buy This?

Why I bought my iPod classic, I went for the 160 GB because I wanted to make sure I had plenty of room. After all, my Creative Zen had 40 GB, and that held only a fraction of my music library and audio books. After loading up the iPod, though, I realized I had a lot of room left over. I decided to put my favorite DVDs on there so that I could watch them while on the treadmill.

After trying multiple free solutions that required long processing time that sucked all the power out of my machine, I tried out DVD Catalyst. I was hooked. It was a one-stop-shop package to rip the DVD and put it on my iPod. You start the package, put in the DVD, select your settings and press a button. That is all there is to it.

Free Full Trial

Another thing I really liked about this software is that the trial version is a full version, available for 7 days. That allowed me to try out the software without having to extrapolate functionality.

Summary

I think that DVD Catalyst is well worth the money. The free solutions are, well, free, but paying the $20 has saved me a lot of time and effort to get my DVDs onto my iPod.

One of the commonly asked questions we receive is why there are black bars when you watch video on a portable device. To explain this, there are a few things that we need to explain first.

DVD video has a fixed resolution. To ensure DVDs play on even the first generation of DVD players, a DVD movie has to be created using the official standard. If it is not created in such a way that it is compliant with the standard, not all DVD players can play the DVD.

Because the DVD standard was initially created when wide-screen at home was still in its early stage, the DVD standard was based on 4:3 video content. An original movie or TV show would fill the screen completely on a classic, standard-definition TV. However, wide-screen became more mainstream, and to stay compliant with the DVD standard, wide-screen movies received black padding to fit within the DVD specifications.

Unlike most conversion utilities, DVD Catalyst automatically removes the embedded borders from the video, which improves the video quality. The black borders are actually part of the video, and when these are not removed, they will take up valuable space.

With the black bars removed, the video portion that is left does not have a common screen resolution anymore, and the actual size depends on the actual movie as well. There are a few different aspect ratios (the width of the actual widescreen movie) which greatly affect this. In addition. the video player screen also affect the amount of video that fills the screen.

This all sounds complicated, but lets use some pictures to see what this looks like.

This shows an example of Apple’s iPod Video (5G) with a widescreen video. The iPod uses a 4:3 screen aspect ratio, which is the same for many other devices, such as the most Zen and Zune devices. The black borders of the actual video have been removed, but when you play the video on your device, it will stillshow black borders.

The reason for this is that the video is scaled to fit within the device screen size, without changing the look of the video.

The next example shows a Sony PSP with a widscreen video. The PSP has an actual widescreen screen, which is similar to Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the newer Blackberry models and many more devices. The video fills the screen a lot more, but it still shows a bit of borders on top and bottom.

OK, so how do we make movies full-screen?

There are a few ways of doing this. The thing to keep in mind is that there will be a loss of something, either quality or part of the video itself.

1. Both video player devices in the screen shots have a “zoom” function (many other players have this as well). This will remove the black borders, by zooming in, and hiding the sides.

This is the recommended option, because you can decide if you want to watch the movie in it’s full glory (and accept the black borders) or watch the movie full screen. You can even switch back and forth.

2. DVD Catalyst 3 has a “remove black bars from device” option in Global Settings. This will remove black bars from the video, and if needed cut off parts of the sides of the video to make it full screen. Using this will make any movie or show full screen on any device, regardless the screen size or the video size. If you convert a widescreen movie for a non-widescreen device, it will cut off the sides, and if you convert a non-wide screen video for a wide-screen device, it will cut off the top and bottom a bit. Depending on the movie you can loose quite a bit of the video. For example using this option with a very wide Star Wars movie on a 4:3 device, you can loose more than half of the actual video. While movies and TV shows almost always keep the main plot in the center of the video, you will loose things that happen on the sides. If you convert for a Square-screen device, you will loose even more video.

3. DVD Catalyst 3 has a”Full screen stretch” option in Global Settings, which will remove the black bars, and stretch the video to make it full screen. The problem with this is that depending on the video size, people might appear to be taller and skinnier than usual.

So, if you are wondering why DVD Catalyst 3 shows it’s converting at a different screensize than the one you selected, the above should give you some insight on this.
