We were so excited about the new features in DVD Catalyst 3.90 that we took too much on our plates. During development, we added the new file-transfer code recently included in DVD Catalyst Free Plus, and besides inclusion of new device profiles, we modified 2-pass conversions so that the first pass would be faster, and we made some changes to the black bar removal process.

Unfortunately the last bit is causing problems for a lot of people. Even though we cannot replicate the problems ourselves in 3.90.2,  some people are still reporting complications.

As a result, we decided to pull 3.90, and go back to 3.86.2 untill we get everything resolved.

To “update” back to 3.86.2, click on the cat-eyes in DVD Catalyst 3.

Of course the new profiles and the file-transfer code of DVD Catalyst 3.90 are still there as well.

To boost the audio quality and maximize the volume (all your conversions will have the same volume if you use this) enable the checkmark with the speaker. If you want the video title displayed during the first few seconds of the video, enable the title checkmark. For Black bar removal options, click on the mountain scene button to see the available options.

You can add as many video files as you want, and if you have multiple DVD drives, DVD Catalyst Free Plus will convert from all of them. When you have the content you want to convert listed in the program, click on the arrow-button at the bottom right to start the conversion.

After the conversion is complete, DVD Catalyst Free Plus will ask you to connect your iPad to your computer.

After you have connected the iPad (and iTunes has started up) click on OK

Other solutions you might have ran into are so-called “guides” that explain to use multiple free programs such as Handbrake, Videora, DVDshrink, but these guides are far from easy. Multiple steps, involving using one program to backup the DVD to your harddrive (large filesize) or the need to install a non-free program such as AnyDVD (not always mentioned in a guide), changing settings in a different program to match the settings of your device, or for compatibility reasons, select a profile for a different device, settling for lower quality.DVD Catalyst Free for iPhone 4 is designed to eliminate the need for all that. After scanning of a DVD, the available tracks will display in the program. Things such as trailers will be filtered out, but some special features, as well as TV episodes if you insert a TV DVD will appear. Tracks that have a checkmark in front of them will be converted. If you have multiple DVD drives, or want to convert multiple movies, just add them all to the program before you continue.

Once you have all the items you want to convert in the program, click on the button to start the process.

Depending on the length of your video(s) and the amount of files/tracks you have added for the conversion, this can take a while. Although DVD Catalyst Free is slightly limited in conversion speed from DVDs (DVD Catalyst Free Plus and DVD Catalyst 3 are quite a bit faster with DVDs) video files and ISOs convert pretty fast. While many similar programs claim to be “faster”, please understand that DVD Catalyst Free (and our other products) use the high quality H264 video format for its video. The “faster” programs often use “MPEG4 SP” (or a variation thereof) as a video format which does convert faster, but produces lower quality video files.

Conversion speed is tied directly to your computer-speed. Multi-Core significantly speeds up conversions.

After the conversion is finished, DVD Catalyst Free will open the location on your computer where the files are stored, and all you need to do is add the files to the Apple iTunes library and transfer them to your iPhone 4.

File transfer:

A few weeks ago, we rebooted DVD Catalyst Free Plus to single-device versions to incorporate a build-in file-transfer. With just one device type to worry about, the implementation for this was fairly simple, however, with the multi-device capabilities of DVD Catalyst 3(queue up multiple devices) as well as the large number of different device types it supports, it needed to be implemented differently. While we are still working on making this work for some devices (The Zune mainly) it works for most popular devices and phones, either through hands-free iTunes syncing for the Apple iPhone and iPod series, or through file-copy to the device when connected in USB mode. Manual file transfer is an often asked question we receive by email as well as questions posted on forums, so we are excited to eliminate yet another complicated step for putting movies on your device.

Profiles:

Of course, as with every version release of DVD Catalyst 3, profiles for new and upcoming devices have been added. This time, the list includes the Droid 2, Droid X, HTC EVO 4G, Apple  iPhone 4, Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft Kin.

In addition, we added a “Backup” devicegroup, which includes a variety of DIVX, XVID and H264 profiles for backup purposes. Many people ask us what settings to use if they just want to put their DVDs on their laptop or computer, this is the answer. The conversion settings have been customized to produce great looking video.

In addition, various fixes have been applied, mainly in regards of 2-pass conversions and manual black border removal options.

If you do have an older version of DVD Catalyst 3, just click on the cat-eyes in the program to update to the latest version.

We are getting close to DVD Catalyst 4.0, and for the first time, we are not creating a completely new version from scratch. In the 3 years that DVD Catalyst 3 has been available, it has continued to grow in features, updated with new devices and features on a near-monthly basis and still we are not done. As a result, DVD Catalyst 4 will be a free upgrade to DVD Catalyst 3 customers when released !

Even for the people who purchased DVD Catalyst 3.0 when it was first released 3 years ago, they will be able to upgrade to DVD Catalyst 4.0 completely free.This is something unheard of in the industry.

We currently do not have a release date set for DVD Catalyst 4. To quote a (in)famous developer, The release date is “When it’s done!”.

It has taken us a long time to get from 3.0 to 3.9, and many similar applications have increased major version numbers by 1 or 2 only because one new feature was added, but for us, a full version increase has to be something special. The newly added file-transfer mode in DVD Catalyst 3 is grounbreaking enough to come close (which is why we went from 3.86 to 3.90), but we are looking for something even bigger for DVD Catalyst 4.0. First off, in an effort to reduce as much confusion as possible, we eliminated the different device profiles as well as options that can affect compatibility. While it is possible to play files created with DVD Catalyst Free for Droid on other devices such as Droids and Apple’s iPad, iPod and iPhone devices, depending on your DVDs and video files, it might not work.

Album Art.

DVD Catalyst Free for Droid generates “album art” with the video title, which shows up in media management software such as Apple’s iTunes application (including coverflow) as well as in some 3rd party video applications on your Droid.
