Device not listed in DVD Catalyst

Because new devices come out every day, as well as devices that exist under one name, and some cellphone company decides the name isnt cool enough so they rebrand it, it is impossible to list every single device on the planet in DVD Catalyst. While already DVD Catalyst has profiles for 100′s of different devices, many use the same settings.

But, every day, we receive emails from people asking for settings for devices that are not listed;

“I have device X, but its not in DVD Catalyst, what settings do I use?”

Some are even nicer. “Site X said DVD Catalyst is compatible with my X, but it’s not in there.”

DVD Catalyst can create video files for ANY device (capable of video playback) listed on the various sales websites.

The answer to what settings to use with DVD Catalyst depends on the device type.

Most of the questions we receive are about some device that runs some form of Windows Mobile. So, DVD Catalyst has a Windows Mobile section that lists the different versions. For additional settings, just have a look at the specifications in the book that came with the device. When we receive a question, we look up the specifications of the device online, and if we can find it, we suggest settings based on that.

The other questions we receive are either about some obscure, unknown brand of device (China’s famous ipod/iphone/zune clones) or brand new devices. For these devices its quite hard to obtain specifications, because they are either not listed on the internet yet, or they are burried deep on a website in a language we can’t read.

In general,

The newer Windows Mobile phones can play H264/MP4 video files. For these, we suggest to start either with a profile of it’s direct competitor if available, or pick Apple iPhone as a start.

The Apple iPhone profile (without anything behind it) creates video files in H264 format, and shold play on most of them. If that fails try the iPhone (fast) profile, which creates standard MPEG4 video files.

Look in the book of your device for the screen resolution, and then in DVD Catalyst click on Modify to adjust it. Try a small clip (start a conversion, click on the skip button after a few minutes) using these settings to see if it works.

For other devices, if it can play MP4 files, pick Apple iPod Video and if that fails, pick iPod Video (fast).

If it can play AVI files, pick Apple iPod Video, click on Modify, and change the h264_ipod to divx5_mp3, and if that fails, change it to xvid_mp3

If the above does not result in working files, or you want suggestions on how to improve quality, please email us (using the email us button in DVD Catalyst) and let us know what you tried, what works and what not, AND, please provide us with a link to the specifications of the device (or attach the pdf manual to the email)

The more information we have, the better we can assist you.
