MP4 file tags / What is MetaX?

MetaX is an MP4 file tag application. If you ever purchased something from iTunes, you might have noticed that purchased files have a lot of information when you see them listed in your library. Besides the basic information of file-name and playlength, files purchased from the iTunes Store have a picture of the video (or album artwork on music), Genre, year, series, description and more.

This information fields are called Tags, and they are used to make your collection look nicer and easier to search in.

DVD Catalyst, as well as most similar applications do not fill in the tags. Basically they convert your content from one format to another, and leave it at that.

This is where MetaX comes in. MetaX is a free application that enables you to create and modify these “tags”. With MetaX you can put a picture in the video file, which shows when you look in your iTunes library. You can select multiple files, such as all the files of a TV show/season, and put in details such as TV Show name, Season and episode information.

You can do all this from iTunes as well, however, the information you put in is NOT stored in the actual file. iTunes keeps this information in it’s database, and when you transfer the files to another computer, or for some reason have to remove the files from iTunes and put them back in, you will loose all your work. MetaX stores the information in the actual file, so it will always be there.

I use MetaX once in a while, mainly for TV shows. When I convert a season of a TV show, I use MetaX to insert the Show name, picture and the Season, so when I transfer them to my iPod, they appear in a “folder” inside the video menu. The folder is named with the TV show name and the season (other seasons appear as additional folders) and the folder shows the picture as a graphic.
