F.A.Q.
Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Scanning restarted, scanning takes a long time
A: DVD Catalyst accesses a DVD when it finds it to gather required information of it’s contents. Certain DVDs cause issues when accessed a certain way, and when this happens, DVD Catalyst restarts the scanning a different way. Some DVDs work using the first, other DVDs work using the second method. By default, DVD Catalyst uses the most compatible format, reducing the restarting-process to a minimum, but especially for some newer DVDs, it might need to switch.

Q: Conversion is slow
A: There are quite a few reasons why a conversion can be slow. First, keep in mind that a DVD contains 4000 MB to 8000 MB of video content. DVD Catalyst compresses this content to smaller files by reducing the screensize and changing the format the content is created with to make it compatible with your selected device. This process (also known as transcoding) can be quite demanding for a computer.
Certain conversion formats provide a better quality than others, and are usually more demanding of the computer. Many devices accept the high quality H264/AVC video formats (Apple iPod, Apple iPhone, PSP, Zune etc) and converting to these formats require quite a bit of horsepower from a computer. These formats benefit tremendously from Dual/Quad or more cores.
The quality settings also make a huge difference in conversion speed. The higher the quality settings, including video/audio quality and screensize all impact the speed in a great way.
The computer itself makes a big difference. A dual-core (Core Duo) or newer will result in faster conversions, but the memory, as well as the speed of the harddisk and the DVD drive all make a difference. Converting to or from a USB device will also slow down conversions quite a bit, and NEVER convert directly to a memorycard or device. Doing this will really slowdown the conversions.

Q: Weird error messages
A: Sometimes, for one reason or another, DVD Catalysts settings can become corrupted. This can happen when a DVD has scratches and the conversion caused DVD Catalyst to crash. If you are having issues with weird error messages when you start or run DVD Catalyst, please try to reset it’s settings. In the Help-section in Global Settings you can click on “Reset Settings” to fix this, or, if you can not use that for some reason, please follow the following procedure:
* Make sure DVD Catalyst is not running.
* Click on Start > Run or hold down the Windows-key (bottom left on your keyboard) and tap the “R” key
* type in:
%appdata%
and click OK
* delete the “DVD Catalyst3″ folder (this is automatically recreated when you start DVD Catalyst)
